0001093: [Usabilty] Attract User to Pay Attention on New Submissions

When I installed Geeklog for the first time, I wouldn't know that there are new submissions on my site if I didn't try admin's menu one by one. I think this is the theme's developer should consider. My suggestion is to make it bold just like mail's inbox or using a tooltip like Facebook notification.

0001020: List of allowed HTML tags in Advanced Editor

When calling up the Story Editor with Advanced Editor enabled, the list of allowed HTML tags (and available autotags) is sometimes not visible (exact steps to reproduce see below).

Now, you could argue that the HTML tags are not relevant in text mode, but since the list also includes the autotags (which work in text mode), I think that list should always be displayed.

Not sure which code (JavaScript?) is responsible for hiding it in the first place, though.

For anonymous user $_USER['username'] is anonymous, so calendar Login Required is not honored as check is:
0000911: make staticpage textarea expandable like story editor + and - Buttons

If you change the layout from html to Advanced Editor for a static page, you won't see much of your content, especially, if you have a more complex static page.

The solution could be the same mechanism like you use within the story editor.
A + and - Button for the textarea.

Below you'll find a simple solution as a intermediate step - for a full solution the layout must be changed to DIVs I guess.

0001085: Add templates to StaticPage plugin

Problem: I have about 50 staticpages on my site which are formatted the same but contain different text information. If I want to make one html tweak I then have to update 50 pages.

Solution: Allow a staticpage to be assigned as a template in which other staticpages can be based on. If I then modify the template then all staticpages using it will reflect the change.

There is a number of ways this could be handled. How I see it possibly working is the template staticpage is created like a normal staticpage except it will contain template variables wherever the user wants.

When creating a new normal staticpage I can then select a template to base it on. From there I can input the data (text, html, etc...) for any variables from the template. The real question is how do you handle inputting of this text for variables? Should we just use the current staticpage text editor which you could do something like this in to define the variables:

templatevar1 = "Text goes here"

templatevar2 = "More text blah blah blah blah blah blah blah "

The staticpage plugin could then parse this page and then combine it with the template when this page is viewed.

OR

Should we actually have a new form and table to hold this template variable data?

0001084: kses library breaks HTML attributes written in a multibyte language

When posting an article, what you post is filtered by COM_checkHTML which uses kses library. Some HTML attributes (like "alt" or "title") can have "\xad" in its value when you write in utf-8 in a multibyte language. Unfortunately, kses library eats any "\xad" byte included in the value, thus making it an illegal string which results in MySQL error.

Of course you can avoid this by setting $_CONF['skip_html_filter_for_root'] to true, but I think this only compromises security, Geeklog's main strength.

It is high time we were looking for an alternative to kses library. For example, HTML purifier is a good candidate. Its current version runs only on PHP-5.x, but v2.1.5 (which was released on 2008-06-19) runs on PHP-4.x as well. As far as I know, it is not very difficult to integrate it with GL.

0001002: Sort by date not working in search results

Try this search on my site:

http://www.macosxhints.com/search.php?query=applescript&keyType=all&type=all&mode=search&order=date&direction=desc

In theory, that should return the newest matches for "Applescript" at the top of the list, as it's told to sort by date descending.

In reality, I have no idea what it's returning. The first page starts with a hit from 2002, then other pages start with seemingly random different years. Screenshots attached.

This is a very key feature for searching on my site, because almost always, the newer information is more relevant than the older information.
